Brief information of Lanthanum Nitrate

Formula: cCAS No.: 10277-43-7
Molecular Weight: 432.92
Melting point:  65-68 °C
Appearance: Off-white crystalline
Solubility: Soluble in water and strong mineral acids

Application:

Lanthanum Nitrate is mainly applied in specialty glass, water treatment and catalyst. Various compounds of Lanthanum and other rare-earth elements (Oxides, Chlorides, etc.) are components of various catalysis, such as petroleum cracking catalysts. Small amounts of Lanthanum added to steel improves its malleability, resistance to impact, and ductility, whereas addition of Lanthanum to Molybdenum decreases its hardness and sensitivity to temperature variations. Small amounts of Lanthanum are present in many pool products to remove the Phosphates that feed algae.Lanthanum Nitrate is used in the manufacture of ternary catalysts, tungsten molybdenum electrodes, optical glass, phosphor, ceramic capacitor additives, magnetic materials, chemical reagents and other industries

Lanthanum nitrate is easily deliquescent and has oxidizing properties. Hazardous Chemical Substances. Inhaling lanthanum and its compounds in smoke and dust can cause symptoms such as headaches and nausea, and in severe cases, it can lead to death. Because lanthanum nitrate has combustibility, it is classified as an explosive substance.

Physical and chemical properties of lanthanum nitrate

Colorless triclinic crystal. Melting point 40 ℃. Easily soluble in water and ethanol, soluble in acetone. Heat to 126 ℃ for decomposition, first to form an alkaline salt, and then to form an oxide. When heated to 800 ℃, it decomposes into lanthanum oxide. It is easy to form crystalline complex salts such as Cu [La (NO3) 5] or Mg [La (NO3) 5] with copper nitrate or magnesium nitrate. After mixing and evaporating with ammonium nitrate solution, large colorless crystal hydrated double salt (NH4) 2 [La (NO3) 5] • 4H2O is formed, and the latter can lose water of crystallization when heated at 100 ℃. When it interacts with hydrogen peroxide, lanthanum peroxide (La2O5) powder is generated [1.2].
